Hawaiʻi musicians: mark your calendars for Saturday, October 12th!  The Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts’ (HARA) Board of Governors, in partnership with the Hawai‘i International Film Festival (HIFF) and with funding provided by the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT), is presenting a Fall Workshop Series that you do NOT want to miss! Topics include:  royalties; marketing and promotion; pricing (or “valuing”) your work; and more!

Among the speakers are Richard Bellis (Director of ASCAP); Nick Terzo (A&R exec who worked with a number of record companies including Columbia and Hollywood [Disney] and who is a digital media and brand industry executive); Bill Meyer (intellectual property attorney – e.g. expert on music law!).

There will be four workshops:

1. Royalties - How Do I Get Paid? 
This workshop will provide background information on performance rights societies (ASCAP, BMI, SoundExchange, etc.) and why they are important. 
Panelists: Richard Bellis, Bill Meyer, Bob Nelson, and Jeff Peterson

2. A two-part master class on (1) film composer skill sets and (2) pricing your work: is creating music work or recreation? What is the difference between a music hobbyist and a music professional?

3. Marketing and Promotion Part 1 - Social Media
#WhatAreHashTagsFor? This workshop will focus on the use of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media vehicles, and how to maximize their use while increasing exposure and reach.
Panelists: Melissa Chang, Russ Sumida, Nicholas Terzo 

4. Marketing and Promotion Part 2 - Promotion
This workshop will focus on creative promotion strategies that will assist artists in creating a presence within the community and the importance of the image that the artist presents.
Panelists: Tracy Laurra, Yumi Ozaki, and Nicholas Nerzo
