Ho’omaika’i (congratulations) to Hawai’i’s own  Napua Grieg and Kuana Torres Kahele on the phenomenal success of the Disney/Pixar short  “LAVA"! Shown just before “Inside Out,” LAVA/Inside Out had the biggest-ever opening at the box office for an original film. The films earned $90.4 million at the domestic box office and $132 million globally.

Inspired by the "isolated beauty of tropical islands and the explosive allure of ocean volcanoes," LAVA is a musical love story about... volcanoes. It takes place over millions of years, with Kahele playing the role of Uku, a lonely volcano searching for his one true love. Kumu hula Grieg plays the role of the volcano Lele, who is Uku's love interest.

The touching story and title song have received rave reviews from critics and movie goers alike, who have filled social media with comments like this from one man who said, “I was crying over a lonely Volcano!”

Kahele and Grieg (seen below at the premiere with the movie's producer Andrea Warren and director Jim Murphy) are both multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winners (Hawai’i’s GRAMMY®), and Grieg is a multiple winner at the prestigious Merrie Monarch hula competition. Could an Oscar be next for these two multi-talented Hawaiians?

Note: LAVA’s title song is now available for download on iTunes, but you can listen to it here:

Originally from California, Iʻve lived on Oʻahu for a number of years. Music has always been my passion and Iʻm fortunate to be able to work with and support many of Hawaiʻiʻs musicians. For such a tiny speck in the middle of a very large ocean, we have an amazing wealth of talent  here!
