The “Made in Hawaiʻi Festival” is held every August at the Neal S. Blaisdell Exhibition Hall and Arena in Honolulu. The huge, three-day event features thousands of products made in Hawaiʻi, as well as cooking demonstrations and live music.

This year’s festival takes place August 16-18. Admission is $4 (children six and under free). Festival goers can buy everything from food to clothing to jewelry to art and more. Visit Auntie Paulette and watch her demonstrate her skills at feather art. Buy fresh, hot Molokai bread from Kanemitsuʻs Bakery. Stop by the Hawaiian Fudge Sauce booth and sample some of the best fudge sauce ever. Choose from a wide variety of plants at Olomana Tropicals. Pick up a dress or t-shirt at Puahina/Warrior Designs or East Honolulu Clothing Company. Watch (and sample!) cooking demonstrations by some of Hawaiʻi’s top chefs. And of course, enjoy the free concerts throughout the day!

The musical entertainment takes place in the Pikake room (in the exhibition hall) and features some of Hawaiʻi’s top artists, hosted by well-known radio personalities. The music typically begins at 10:30 am on Friday and Saturday, 11 am on Sunday.

Festival hours are 10am – 9pm Friday and Saturday; 10 am – 5pm Sunday. For more information go to the Made in Hawaiʻi website.

NOTE: I originally posted what was supposed to be the 2013 entertainment lineup in this article, but discovered that the list of performers on the festivalʻs website is at least partially incorrect. I've requested the correct schedule and will post it here as soon as I receive it.

Following the overwhelmingly positive response to their performance of Simon and Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water at the 2013 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards (Hawaii’s Grammy® Awards), nominees Sunway and Kamakakehau Fernandez have combined their voices once again to release a single of the song – with 100% of the proceeds going to charity.

Asked to perform together during the televised broadcast of the Awards show, Sunway (nominated for “Female Vocalist” and “Contemporary Album” of the year) and Kamakakehau (nominated for “Most Promising Artist” and “Hawaiian Language Performance,” and winner of “EP of the Year”), chose Bridge Over Troubled Water for its inspirational lyrics and universal message of brotherly love. At the time they chose the song, they had no idea how much it would touch viewers... While in rehearsals for the Awards show, deadly tornadoes struck Oklahoma, which prompted the duo to dedicate their performance to the thousands who had been affected.

Audience response to their emotional performance was such that the decision was made to record the song, make it available for purchase, and donate 100% of the proceeds to a local charity as a way of demonstrating their Aloha to those who may be suffering, regardless of the cause. To that end, they have chosen Aloha United Way as the recipient.

Performed in both English (Sunway) and Hawaiian (Kamakakehau), Bridge Over Troubled Water was produced by multi-platinum, award-winning composer Joerg Alfter, and features Bryan Kessler and Dave Watanabe on guitar, Harry Ladera on bass, and  Stacey Tangonan on percussion. It was recorded at Studio Ala Moana (Michael Grande, Engineer). Everyone involved with the project donated their time.

The single is being released as a digital download only. It is now available on iTunes, and will be available on July 15 on CD Baby and Sunway’s website, followed by wider release on Amazon and Google Play at a later date.

Do yourself a favor and purchase this beautiful rendition of a classic song - and support these two artists in their quest to spread some aloha using their considerable talents and very generous hearts.

Originally from California, Iʻve lived on Oʻahu for a number of years. Music has always been my passion and Iʻm fortunate to be able to work with and support many of Hawaiʻiʻs musicians. For such a tiny speck in the middle of a very large ocean, we have an amazing wealth of talent  here!
