Hawai’i musicians! Did you release a CD, EP, single, music video, or music DVD for retail sale in the 2018 calendar year (Jan. 1 - Dec. 31)? The deadline to submit entries for the 2019 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards is Friday, January 18, 4pm HST! (Note: that’s received by, not postmarked by.)
The guidelines, entry form, and the “documentation of release and commercial availability” form are all available below, and online at the Hawai'i Academy of Recording Arts (HARA) website. Please read them carefully! You can submit the entry form online, or download, print, and mail. You must also submit a minimum of three physical copies of the music (on CD) or video (on DVD) - more copies are needed if you're submitting in some categories. Note: because digital submissions were problematic last year, all submissions this year must be hard copy - sorry!

A few things to keep in mind:
- Your entry must have been available for retail sale by December 31, 2018, and you must be able to document it. Commercial availability (“retail sale”) does not include your website or at gigs. Eligible retail sale locations include brick-and-mortar stores, online stores (other than your website), and digital sites such as CD Baby, iTunes, Amazon, etc. Streaming services like Pandora, YouTube, and Spotify are also eligible - provided they’re generating revenue.
- Even if your release was digital-only, you must submit the appropriate number of physical copies (on CD or DVD). This includes all entries - CDs, EPs, singles, videos and DVDs. (Note: many newer laptops and desktops no longer come equipped with a CD or DVD burner. If you don’t have one, find a friend who does, or search for local businesses that provide the service!) You can also buy a burner relatively inexpensively to hook up to your laptop or desktop.
- Be sure to use certified mail or get a receipt from the post office for use as proof that you mailed all entry materials in sufficient time to arrive at HARA before the deadline. Last year several entries that would otherwise have been disqualified were "saved" because the senders had proof of mailing dates. (A padded flat rate envelope or small flat rate box works well, too, as they have tracking numbers assigned that can be looked up online.
